This royal Psalm announces that God's purpose will not be defeated by political power. The earliest Christians recognized its fulfillment in Jesus, the Son and Messiah: Acts applies the opposition of rulers to the events surrounding his Passion. The promise of the Son also enters New Testament teaching about Christ's dignity. Catholic reading honors the original setting of an Israelite king while recognizing a fulfillment that surpasses every earthly throne. The Psalm calls nations and individuals alike to trust God's reign rather than their own force.
