Psalm 122 binds worship to the well-being of the whole community. Its heading links it with David, though it belongs to the later pilgrimage collection. Catholics can pray for peace in the earthly Jerusalem while also contemplating the heavenly Jerusalem promised in the New Testament. The Psalm teaches that approaching God should enlarge our concern for the common good, justice, and reconciliation. A holy city is not merely beautiful architecture; it is a people summoned to live in peace.
