BOOK 3 • PSALMS 73–89 Psalm 88 — A Prayer from the Deepest Darkness FORM: Individual lament | Traditional heading: sons of Korah; Heman the Ezrahite Psalm 88 is one of the starkest prayers in Scripture. It begins in desperation and, unlike many laments, ends without a clear turn to joy. Its heading associates it with the sons of Korah and Heman the Ezrahite. Catholics need not force an optimistic ending onto this text. It gives faithful language to grief, depression, abandonment, and long suffering, while reminding us that addressing God is still an act of relationship. Jesus' descent into the depths of human suffering makes him near to those who have no words of consolation. The Church can pray beside them without rushing them. Scripture connections: Mark 14, verses 33–36; Hebrews 4, verse 15 Read Psalm 88 (NABRE) on Bible Gateway
