Its heading places it in the tradition of David's repentance after the prophet Nathan confronted him. The prayer asks not merely for relief from guilt but for a clean heart and renewed spirit. In Catholic life it holds a central place in penitence, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and the Liturgy of the Hours. It also teaches that outward religious acts cannot replace a contrite heart. Mercy is not denial of wrongdoing; it is the beginning of new creation in a sinner willing to return to God.
