It also asks God to guard the mouth, protect the heart from evil, and receive correction from the righteous. Catholics naturally hear a liturgical echo in the image of incense, which signifies prayer rising to God. The Psalm binds outward worship to the daily discipline of speech and conduct. It is useful before difficult conversations, moments of anger, and times when compromise seems attractive. The Lord is asked not only to protect us from others but to keep us from becoming unjust ourselves.
