Power is neither self-created nor immune to moral judgment. The ancient image of a cup of judgment echoes elsewhere in Scripture and challenges triumphal confidence. Catholic readers should resist using the Psalm to pronounce God's final verdict on particular opponents. Instead, it encourages humility, repentance, and hope that injustice is not ultimate. Jesus' teaching that the exalted will be humbled gives this prayer a demanding personal application: judgment starts with how we ourselves use influence.
