The people confess a long pattern of forgetting, idolatry, and injustice. Catholics can pray it as a communal examination of conscience, especially when the failures of institutions or generations demand truth rather than excuses. God does not cease to be faithful because human beings have been unfaithful, but his mercy calls for repentance. The Psalm's closing blessing concludes the fourth book of the Psalter and points toward renewed praise.
