Drawing upon the Scripture readings for All Saints Day—Revelation 7:2–4, 9–14; Psalm 24; 1 John 3:1–3; and Matthew 5:1–12—and Pope Benedict XVI's beautiful reflection on eternal life, Before Tuesday Slips Away invites us to appreciate the ordinary blessings we so easily overlook. A sandwich. A friend. A chance to forgive. A Tuesday that will never come again. But the Christian hope reaches far beyond simply enjoying the days we have. As Pope Benedict reminds us, eternity is not an endless succession of days, but something altogether greater—an immersion in the ocean of infinite love, where we are transformed in communion with God. “We shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” (1 John 3:2) The saints remind us that holiness is not reserved for extraordinary people doing extraordinary things. It is God's grace at work in ordinary lives, through mercy, forgiveness, humility, and love. So enjoy every sandwich. Love the people God places beside you. And don't let Tuesday slip away without recognizing the gift it holds. Dedicated with gratitude to Father Brandon, whose All Saints Day homily inspired this song. Lord, we long to see Your face.
