BOOK 2 • PSALMS 42–72 Psalm 72 — A King Who Defends the Poor FORM: Royal / Messianic hope | Traditional heading: Solomon Traditionally linked to Solomon, Psalm 72 imagines a king who judges justly, rescues the poor, and extends peace to the ends of the earth. No ordinary monarch completely fulfills that vision. Catholic tradition therefore reads it as a royal hope brought to fullness in Jesus, whose kingship serves rather than exploits. The gifts brought by distant kings have also inspired Epiphany associations with the Magi, a liturgical connection rather than a direct Gospel quotation of the Psalm. The measure of righteous rule is care for the vulnerable. Its concluding blessing closes the second book of the Psalter. Scripture connections: Matthew 2, verses 1–12; Luke 4, verses 18–19 Read Psalm 72 (NABRE) on Bible Gateway
