The speaker discovers that material accumulation cannot provide lasting security. Catholic spirituality has long encouraged meditation on mortality—not to cultivate despair, but to learn wisdom about time and eternity. Jesus' warning about the rich fool speaks to the same illusion that possessions can guarantee tomorrow. The Psalm finally places hope in God, who alone can give meaning to passing years. Its questions are especially suited to moments of loss, aging, and serious decisions.
