<description>The "Ave Maria" by Bach/Gounod is one of the most beloved sacred works ever written — a melody by the French Romantic composer Charles Gounod (1818–1893) superimposed over Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude No. 1 in C Major, BWV 846, originally published in 1853 as "Méditation sur le 1er Prélude de Piano de S. Bach," and ever since a prayer of transcendent beauty that draws the heart gently upward to Our Lady. The text is the ancient Hail Mary prayer — "Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum" — invoking Mary as full of grace, blessed among women, and asking her intercession for us sinners now and at the hour of our death, a prayer rooted in the Angel Gabriel's annunciation in Luke 1:28 and Elizabeth's greeting in Luke 1:42. This Sunday, the Sixth Sunday of Easter, as Jesus promises His disciples in John 14:15–21, "I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you" — this Ave Maria becomes a prayer of trust, entrusting ourselves to Mary's motherly intercession and resting in the promise of a God who loves us and will never abandon us. Recorded live by J. Nicholas from the Sunday 7pm Choir at SFDS Parish, Ajax ON Canada.
