The beauty of the holy city stands in contrast to the fear of hostile kings. Catholic reading respects Jerusalem's historical place in Israel's worship while looking forward to the heavenly Jerusalem described in the New Testament. The Church is a pilgrim people seeking the dwelling of God, not merely an earthly monument or a geographical victory. The Psalm's final confidence is in the Lord who guides his people through all generations.
