Its bold honesty is the prayer of a community suffering despite its desire to remain faithful. Saint Paul quotes its language about being treated as sheep for slaughter before announcing that nothing can separate Christians from Christ's love. Catholics can therefore pray this Psalm for persecuted believers, displaced families, and communities broken by disaster. The suffering described is not proof that God has ceased to love his people. Fidelity may be tested most severely when rescue cannot yet be seen.
